It’s been a few weeks since my last Thursday Thoughts. I’d like to blame that on my busy schedule, or just life in general, but really it’s because I’ve been in a funk of writer’s block for a while now. I hope that I am climbing over that block now; today I want to share with you a video that helped me re-center, and of course, a few cat pictures.
Remembering to Savor
Isaac and I tend to watch random YouTube videos while we eat dinner. I’m not exactly sure how this started, but it’s tradition now. Often, these videos make me raise an eyebrow because they are not my flavor. For example – videos about Unifi networking gear – aren’t really that interesting to me. However, others have expanded my subscription list like Jun’s Kitchen or Marques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD.
Perhaps my favorite channel Isaac has introduced me to is the Vlog Brothers. I realize I am dreadfully late to the party here, but I greatly enjoy their weekly cadence of video volley. Hank’s videos are a great balance of topics and delivery that mirror my own thought process. John’s videos often remind me of the bigger picture of life and what that means.
John’s Tuesday video on July 27 is titled “Savoring: The Sunset Series Returns.” It is a beautiful reminder to take a break. I don’t do this often enough (let’s be real I don’t do this period). He encourages us to take a breath, and savor that simple moment. It is much better watched, then explained. Go on, take 3 minutes and watch.
I often put pressure on myself when it comes to my personal writing. I tend to think about what to write from other’s perspectives. I ask myself “will someone else like this?” way too often, and don’t ask myself “do I want to write about this?” often enough. This concern is really why I get writer’s block. I kill most of my ideas before they start because those reading it might not identify with every post.
John’s video re-centered me when I wasn’t expecting it. It is amazing what one, small moment can do to reset your mind and perspective. I savor translating my life experiences into words, and sharing those events with others. And even if other folks don’t always identify with my words, it is enough that I find balance in writing. It is ok to savor this action for myself, and find joy in it, even if that’s all it ever amounts to.
I appreciate every single person who takes the time to read this blog. I hope that every once in a while, you find something meaningful here. I hope you savor that time, and enjoy taking a quiet moment in this chaotic life to breathe with me.
A Ripe Tomato & Cats To Wrap Up The Week
This week, my first ever tomato ripened. It’s just a small Roma, but it tasted amazing. I am quite proud of myself.
I hope your Friday goes smoothly, and that you have an amazing weekend. I plan on spending some time playing that Alpha release of a video game I recently backed on Kickstarter. I can’t talk more about it yet, (there’s an NDA), but man, when I can, get ready! I am so pumped! In the meantime, here’s some pictures of cats napping and lounging.
Until next time – keep savoring.
